By wiping the slate clean and turning the page to the next chapter, Sleeping With Sirens realigned on their fifth full-length and first album for Sumerian Records, the acclaimed How It Feels to Be Lost. The gold-certified quintet, led by vocalist and chief songwriter Kellin Quinn, recentered and got back to the basics that led them to success: great songs. This simplified approach helped them create one of their most acclaimed releases yet.
“We needed to get back into a room and not care about the outcome,” says Kellin. “We needed to sit down and write something from our hearts that we really love and believe in without regard for opinion. That’s what we did. We didn’t care about the result. Everything finally fell into place.”
Success, however, is not new for the band. Since emerging in 2010, Kellin and Sleeping With Sirens have tested the boundaries of rock by walking a tightrope between pop, punk, metal, hardcore, electronic, acoustic, and even a little R&B. This high-wire balancing act attracted a faithful fan base known as “Strays,” generated global album sales in excess of 1.5 million, ignited over half-a-billion streams, and achieved a trio of gold-selling singles: “If I’m James Dean, You’re Audrey Hepburn,” “If You Can’t Hang,” and “Scene Two-Roger Rabbit.” They launched two albums—Feel and Madness—into the Top 15 of the Billboard Top 200. 2017’s Gossip included “Gossip”, the 2018 Olympics & Paralympics Official Team USA Anthem. Additionally, Kellin collaborated with MGK on “Alone”, Pierce the Veil on the platinum-certified “King For A Day” and the producer/DJ Yultron on “The Bottom.” Beyond selling out shows worldwide and receiving acclaim from The New York Times; Alternative Press crowned them “Artist of the Year” at the Alternative Press Music Awards, proclaimed “Kick Me” the 2015 “Song of the Year”, and has featured them as cover stars a whopping eight times.
The most recent effort, How It Feels to Be Lost, has accrued more than 75 million streams since its release with the band currently streaming to more than 2 million listeners per month on Spotify. Playlist adds include New Music Friday, Rock This!, New Noise, multiple covers of New Core and many more inclusions across all DSPs. How It Feels to Be Lost also spawned a top 30 record in their first Rock radio campaign with “Agree to Disagree.” A Deluxe version of the album, including a new single, “Talking to Myself”, and three acoustic versions of fan-favorites from the original, will be released in August 2020.
Since How It Feels to Be Lost’s release, Kellin has reconnected with producer Cameron Mizell, and the resulting 6-track EP will live under a new project name, Downer, Inc. This outlet for Kellin’s creativity functions as a “musical diary of sorts”, with songwriting centered on his emotional core, layered atop mellow background sounds that can be played on a pensive night-drive home. In an effort to someday bring his fans an amazing live experience to accompany the new sound, Kellin continues to challenge himself to learn new instruments and traverse musical genres and styles.
